July 2024 is approaching July 2012 temperatures, the warmest July since 1930, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology reported Tuesday in its monthly bulletin. The average monthly temperatures have ranged between 21C and 29C, with a positive deviation from the monthly norm of between 1.5C and 4C. The highest temperature of 42.2C was recorded in the town of Sandanski on July 16.

Maximum and minimum temperatures

The lowest temperature, 5.8C, was measured in Chepelare on July 5, and the lowest temperature on a mountain peak, minus 0.5C, was recorded at Musala Peak on July 26. In Sofia, the highest temperature, 36.2C, was measured on July 17 and the lowest, 9.9C, on July 4.

Precipitation

In terms of precipitation, July 2024 is similar to July 2023, with precipitation around and below normal. In the westernmost and easternmost regions, monthly precipitation totals are mostly between 1% and 50% of the climate normal, between 50% and 150% in the central part of the country, and 193% in Kazanlak.

On July 26, the largest amount of rainfall in 24 hours, 75 mm, was measured in the town of Vetovo, Ruse Region, due to flooding. Hail was recorded on eleven days of the month, but only in some places.

Agrometeorological conditions

The rainfall in the third decade of July was late for some of the spring crops grown under non-irrigated conditions. The drought caused serious damage, especially to sunflower, maize and field bean crops in the northeast, such as the agricultural region of Silistra. Some of the late maize hybrids, as a result of the moisture deficit and the hot weather, will be ensilaged before they enter reproductive stage.

Rivers

In July, the level of Bulgarian rivers was around and below the water thresholds. As a result of rainfall, short-term water level increase was recorded in the Danube, East Aegean and West Aegean basins.

In the last ten days of the month, the rivers Fakiyska in Zidarovo village and Ropotamo in Veselie village dried up.
