Bulgaria Has Not Sanctioned
Import of Medical Waste
from EU or Other Countries

Sofia, January 8 (BTA) - Bulgaria has never sanctioned the import of medical waste from EU member states or other countries, informed the Ministry of Environment and Water (MEW) on Wednesday in a release. This came following public statements by BSP leader Kornelia Ninova claiming that the Minister of Environment and Water has presented data showing that some 734,000 tonnes of waste has been imported to Bulgaria over the last five years from various destinations. Part of this is medical waste that will most probably be incinerated.

The Minister of Environment and Water has not presented the data in question. They were provided by the Finance Minister as an answer to an inquiry in Parliament into the import of refuse derived fuel (RDF), medical and pharmaceutical waste over the period between August 1, 2014 and August 28, 2019, the MEW pointed out. The Finance Minister's letter is available on the web site of Parliament.

The MEW has requested and received detailed information from the National Customs Agency, and it does not include any data about import of medical waste and RDFs, the Ministry announced. Upon inspection of the data, it turned out that there are some goods that are not defined as waste under the Waste Management Act (WMA). For example, metals are present in the document both as metal waste and as metal products, including machines and spare parts. Most of the metal items defined as waste under the WMA are actually a valuable resource, fueling Bulgaria's recycling facilities, metallurgy, paper, glass and battery production, the MEW explained.
