Thousands of people gathered at the historical locality of Oborishte to pay tribute to the heroes of the April Uprising. At Oborishte in 1876, Bulgaria's first National Assembly made a decision to declare the April Uprising against the Ottoman rulers.
In an address on the occasion, Parliament deputy chair Rossitsa Kirova recalled the words of revolutionary and writer Zahari Stoyanov, who called the members of the first National Assembly "angels, the most honest and perfect among the people".
She also said, "On this sacred historical site the Bulgarian people expressed in the most definite way their will to reject foreign domination. Their will for freedom. [...] Oborishte is a place of worship, but also of humility before the feat of the first people's representatives. And for us, today's MPs, the deeds of the Oborishte heroes are a yardstick and a role model and at the same time they will be the hardest and the strongest test because they showed us what it means to be an MP and they will remind us how heavy the responsibility is that we bear to the Bulgarian people and what is the height that we have to be at because we are elected," the deputy speaker of parliament further noted.
The ceremony was attended by MPs, Pazardzhik Regional Governor Valentina Kaitazova, representatives of local authorities, public figures and people.
Wreaths and flowers were laid at the Oborishte Memorial with a military ceremony, including a student battalion. A memorial service was held for the participants in the Oborishte meeting.
