Bulgaria’s caretaker Minister of Defence Atanas Zapryanov Monday reaffirmed Bulgaria's determination to continue providing Ukraine with military assistance as long as necessary. "Bulgaria will continue to support the EU and NATO’s efforts to provide Ukraine with all necessary equipment, training, and capacity building in order to strengthen its defence capabilities," Zapryanov said as quoted by his Ministry. He took part in a joint session of the EU Foreign Affairs Ministers and Defence Ministers within the framework of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg, where participants discussed Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
Zapryanov briefed the ministers on the military assistance that Bulgaria provided in 2023 and continues to provide in 2024. Based on a recent review, additional quantities of surplus arms will be identified for delivery to Ukraine.
In the framework of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine, Bulgaria is ready to provide training to infantry units and combat orderlies on its territory. English language training is already being provided to Ukrainian servicemen.
"The European Peace Facility is an important political instrument that we must continue to use in our support for Ukraine", Zapryanov stressed. He described the military support provided from EU Member States’ stockpiles as a viable approach to responding to the urgent needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The Bulgarian caretaker Defence Minister pointed out that common procurement in the EU defence industry will play a key role in Ukraine’s long-term support. As to the new European Defence Industry Programme, which looks to provide financial support from the EU budget among other measures, Zapryanov called for an inclusive approach involving the defence industries of all Member States.
The Minister praised the EU's long-term security and defence commitments to Ukraine, which will contribute to the strengthening and sustainability of the country in the post-war period, the press release said.
