The transformation of the Centre for Underwater Archaeology (CUA) into a UNESCO Regional Centre for Underwater Archaeology for the Black Sea region will make Bulgaria visible worldwide in a field where Bulgaria has a long track record of achievements, both in terms of underwater cultural heritage and in terms of projects implemented, CUA director, archaeologist Nayden Prahov, told BTA.

He noted that this project is of national importance. “I believe that the next governments in the process of creating and consolidating this centre will take the same proactive and positive approach as the last few governments,” Prahov noted.

At the beginning of April, the Ministry of Culture announced that an application had been sent to the Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for the activities of the Bulgarian Centre for Underwater Archaeology to be validated, developed and extended to a category 2 Underwater and World Heritage Centre.
