Commercial workers and trade unionists protested outside Romania's Ministry of Labour and Social Protection in Bucharest on Monday. They are demanding higher wages and decent working conditions, tax exemptions for meal and holiday vouchers, the indexation of private sector wages to the rate of inflation and a national collective agreement to protect their rights.
The protesters played vuvuzelas for ten minutes while waving placards that read "Vacation is not a luxury" and "Hands off coupons for food".
According to the unionists, commercial workers struggle to afford a decent living due to low wages, while the Government ignores them. The protesters also point out the pressure that comes from developing technologies, as AI and mechanisms of monitoring and control lead to insecurity, depression and burnout.
Meanwhile, municipal employees in Romania have launched a warning strike. They report that their wages have not been increased in years, which is why they are threatening a general strike that could potentially block local elections in June.
