site.btaSouth-West University, School Children Develop Robots for Speech Therapy
A meeting between lecturers from the Center on Speech Therapy at Neofit Rilski South-West University and graduates of the Technical Design and Modeling class at the Center for Personal and Creative Development of Children in Blagoevgrad was organised at the BTA National Press Club here on Wednesday. At the meeting, Miglena Simonska, Dean of South-West University's Faculty of Public Health, Health Care and Sport, demonstrated the skills of the robot Nao and how the robot helps in their work with children with speech therapy needs.
On their part, the graduates demonstrated a robot cat constructed by them with the help of their teacher. Simonska evaluated their work, pointing out that what they had developed can be used in speech therapy work with children. "The kitten we saw and the way it is programmed can help by introducing different food products, different sounds that the animals make," Simonska said.
After the meeting, Simonska said that it had been a pleasure to see how the children can program their robots and how the ideas can be implemented. "Our goal was to show children who are interested in developing such technology how it can be useful", added Simonska. The university lecturers tasked the children with developing a robot; it will be shown in May.
On March 6, the Center on Speech Therapy will celebrate the European Speech Language Therapy Day. The highlight this year will be the creation of products with specialists from other fields that help people with speech disorders, Simonska said.
