Sofia, May 19 (BTA) - The Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) approved a report on a extraordinary probe into the water supply and sewerage (WSS) sector, commissioned by the Supreme Administrative Prosecutor's Office, following media publications about the poor state of the water supply and sewerage network in Bulgaria, EWRC representatives said here on Tuesday.

The report analyses and summarizes information about all the 53 WSS companies in this country (including 29 WSS companies with limited areas of operation that had approved business plans at the time of the check.)

According to the data, in 2019, not a single WSS company with an approved business plan met all the quality requirements, set in the plan. Out of 29 companies with approved business plans, five failed to meet more than 50% of the quality requirements, and eleven met 50 to 60 per cent of them. The remaining 13 WSS companies have yet to meet 7 to 11 levels of quality requirements, EWRC informed.

Regarding water supply services, the check found that 79 per cent of the WSS companies with approved business plans did not supply the necessary pressure in their networks, and were not efficient in updating water meters. Fifty-nine per cent of the WSS companies did not meet the requirements regarding the efficiency of the water meter network, and 72 per cent did not meet the energy efficiency criteria for water supply.

According to the report, 55 per cent of the WSS companies in Bulgaria failed to achieve their goals regarding the rehabilitation of the water and sewerage network. Forty-eight per cent of the companies failed to maintain their networks in satisfactory condition, and 41 per cent did not meet the requirements for an uninterrupted water supply. Thus, the report concludes that nearly two-thirds of Bulgaria's WSS companies with approved business plans in 2019 failed to meet the requirements, established to reduce the water losses from WSS networks in Bulgaria.
