Members and supporters of the Vazrazhdane Party on Saturday the blocked the Silistra-Calarasi checkpoint on Bulgaria's border with Romania.

The protesters resent a Constitutional Court decision that rejected a petition initiated by the Party for the holding of a national referendum on keeping the Bulgarian lev instead of adopting the euro.

Vazrazhdane are adamant that the Court's decision "trampled on the Constitution, denied the right of 604,000 Bulgarians [who signed the petition] to express their opinion, and destroyed democracy."

"In our opinion, the Constitutional Court decision is not right. It does not defend Bulgaria's national interest. The referendum must be held, and the Bulgarian people must have their say on whether they are willing to pay the price they are offered," said MP Margarita Gencheva at the site of the protest.

She added that if the people's voice is not heard, Vazrazhdane are ready to carry on their protests countrywide.
