The Vazrazhdane party will collect signatures for a petition that will be presented in the next European Parliament because of the rejection of the referendum on the preservation of the Bulgarian lev, MP Stanislav Stoyanov told journalists at BTA's press club here on Sunday.

The nationalist Eurosceptic party has been protesting over a Constitutional Court decision that rejected a petition initiated by the party for the holding of a national referendum on keeping the Bulgarian lev instead of adopting the euro.

Vazrazhdane are adamant that the Court's decision "trampled on the Constitution, denied the right of 604,000 Bulgarians [who signed the petition] to express their opinion, and destroyed democracy".

Stoyanov stressed that the aim of the petition would be to inform the European community that in Bulgaria democratic values are easily trampled. The ruling assemblage [a term used to describe the ruling majority that often carries a negative connotation] of GERB-UDF, Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms rejected the right of the Bulgarian people to a referendum, this was also done by the highly politicized composition of the Constitutional Court, following the recent appointments, Stoyanov said, adding that his party's European partners will be informed about the situation.

"This problem should not be overlooked, we will look for a solution to preserve the right of the people to speak on key issues for the future of the country," Stoyanov said. He stressed that the protests against the Constitutional Court's decision, which ruled against holding a referendum, despite collecting more than 400,000 signatures, will continue with the blocking of border crossings and ports, as well as in the interior of the country, and it is yet to be decided points the party's activists will close in the coming week. The court's reasoning, which has not yet been made public, is pending, he said.
