More than 22 kg of cocaine were seized by customs inspectors from the department for combating drug trafficking during an inspection at the border crossing point Danube Bridge 2 (New Europe Bridge) at Vidin - Calafat,  the Customs Agency said on its website on Tuesday.

On January 28, customs officers stopped for inspection a car with German registration entering Bulgaria, in which two German citizens were travelling. The search found two caches in the floor, located under the two front seats, covered with a carpet. Inside were 20 packages weighing a total of 22.147 kg. When tested with a field drug test, the substance contained in the packages tested positive for cocaine. The drug was seized.

The two German citizens were detained for up to 72 hours by order of the supervising prosecutor of the Vidin District Prosecutor's Office, the Sofia Prosecutor's Office of Appeals said. They were brought as suspects in pre-trial proceedings for smuggling a narcotic substance. Requests for taking pre-trial detention measures against the suspects are to be submitted to the court, the prosecution service said.
