More than 35,000 tourists visited the ancient stone city of Perperikon in 2023, according to data based on tickets sold. Revenues exceed a total of BGN 131,000, with BGN 121,235 in revenue from tickets alone, Kardzhali Regional History Museum Director Daniela Kodzhamanova told BTA on Monday.
The profile of tourists was diverse, with mainly families visiting the ancient Thracian city. Organized group visits are becoming less and less. It was also observed that more and more Bulgarian expats are visiting the site, Kodzhamanova said.
According to her, Kardzhali Municipality's project to build a visitor centre at the foot of the archaeological complex is nearing completion. She voiced hope this will attract even more tourists to Perperikon.
In 2023, the Kardzhali Regional History Museum was visited by over 12,000 tourists, excluding the initiatives organized in the museum, Kodzhamanova clarified, adding that the revenues there amounted to BGN 44,230.
