A film dedicated to the traditional Bulgarian wedding will be screened on January 20 in Vevey, Switzerland, the Kanatitza Bulgarian-Swiss Association for Culture, Traditions and Education announced this on its Facebook profile.

The organizers of the event are the Kanatitza Association and the Kanatitza Bulgarian School. The screening will take place at 1800 Vevey, Rue des Chenevières 6.

It is part of the school's educational programme and is linked to familiarising students with the traditions and rituals of the traditional Bulgarian wedding from a century ago.

In the past, wedding celebrations lasted a whole week. They were celebrated with many folk songs, choirs and precisely established rituals - before, during and after the solemn day. The wedding had scenarios and exchanges of different lines, and each region had its wedding songs, Kanatitza writes.

Preparations begin several days earlier and include the kneading of the ritual bread. A wedding flag and a best man tree are also prepared to keep with tradition. Flowers for wreaths, a comb and a razor are prepared for a ritual in which the groom shaves and the bride's hair is braided.

The film presents an authentic Bulgarian wedding. It is broadcast with the cooperation of the Lyuben Karavelov Association and the support of the Education and Science Ministry in Bulgaria.

There will be a catered meal, but everyone is welcome to prepare something for the common feast, the association adds.
