site.btaMonetary Donations Up by 29% in 2022 Y/Y - Bulgarian Donors' Forum

Nearly BGN 124.4 million were donated by companies, foundations, individuals and sole traders in 2022, which is a 29% increase compared to 2021, according to the annual analysis of donations prepared by the Bulgarian Donors' Forum (BDF), published on Tuesday.

Companies are the largest funders in 2022 (45% of the total funds donated for the year), followed by foundations (39%). Donations from individual donors ranked third (15%) and those from sole traders were fourth (1%). 

In 2022, there is a clear increase in donations from all private donors: companies, foundations, individuals and sole traders. 

Companies are the largest donor in Bulgaria for the third consecutive year. In absolute terms, they donated BGN 56,265,306. An increase of 10% or BGN 4.9 million more was registered compared to 2021. Businesses have chosen to donate preferentially in the areas of Healthcare, Education and Science and Social Support. 

Foundations have donated a total of BGN 48,409,802 in 2022. An increase of 43% or an increase in absolute value of over BGN 14.6 million is reported. The priority areas supported by the foundations in 2022 are Social Support and Education and Science, and Child and Youth Development, including in the context of the integration of Ukrainian refugees in the country. 

Individuals donated BGN 18,574,735 in 2022, which is BGN 7.6 million more than the previous year and it is the most considerable growth in the analyzed sources of donations during the year - an increase of 70% compared to 2021. Social and health causes retained the top spot as the most supported in 2022 by individuals as well. Human rights philanthropy also saw slight growth. However, other causes remain at the relatively limited level established in previous years or even show a slight decline.

An analysis of the BDF data shows an increase in the volume of donations from all channels and sources: donations declared to the National Revenue Agency, donor SMS and calls, and funds collected through donation platforms are all on the rise.
