Over 20 countries in four continents, including Bulgaria, endorsed a declaration on tripling the share of world nuclear power by 2050 at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28), which is taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, between November 30 and December 12. Bulgaria is represented by President Rumen Radev.

Addressing the event, Radev said that nuclear energy is key to the independence, security and economic growth of societies. He described Bulgaria's success in safely and efficiently operating nuclear power for 50 years to the attending statespersons, among whom were French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish President Andrzej Duda, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry.

At the same time, Radev noted some of the difficulties of using renewables during the energy transition – weather, lack of affordable technological solutions for energy storage, and financial resources. He said that the nuclear power is a more adequate solution.

Kerry, who opened the conference, stressed that science and reality show that the world cannot get to zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 without nuclear power or carbon capture and storage technologies.

Countries that adopted the declaration include the United States, France, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, Romania, Finland, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Canada and the Netherlands.
