site.btaOmbudsman Kovacheva Opens Photo Exhibition Dedicated to People with Down Syndrome

Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva opened a photo exhibition dedicated to people with Down syndrome. The exposition is part of the Ombudsman's national campaign for the rights of children and people with disabilities.

The event was dedicated to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, December 3.

The photographs reveal moments from the lives of Svetlio and Vanya, a man and a woman with Down syndrome. 

This exhibition is very real - it is about people who have one chromosome more, but are always smiling and giving love, the Ombudsman said.  

“The aim of the exhibition is to show that people with Down syndrome can live with dignity when their family takes care of them,” said Rositsa Bukova, the author of the photo exhibition and an active advocate for the rights of people from vulnerable groups. “There are many more people to be photographed during the year-long campaign - we will try to show all people with Down syndrome over 45 who are not institutionally dependent,” Bukova added.

On Monday the exhibition will be at the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, and on December 12 it will visit Pernik, she added.

The photo exhibition is organised jointly with the Bulgarian Mothers' Movement Foundation and the Down Syndrome-Bulgaria association.
