The largest number of students of Bulgarian origin come from Ukraine to study in Bulgaria. A total of 1,049 students from Ukraine have enrolled in Bulgarian universities this academic year, and most of them are representatives of Bulgarian communities, it became clear during a meeting between Education and Science Minister Galin Tzokov and Ukrainian Ambassador to Bulgaria Olesya Ilashchuk, the press centre of the Ministry said on Thursday.

Ilashchuk pointed out that many Ukrainian young people who are not of Bulgarian origin also want to study at Bulgarian universities. However, they are hindered by the higher tuition fees paid by non-EU citizens. Tzokov suggested that Bulgarian and Ukrainian universities cooperate by offering joint studies. One of the possibilities to do this is by including Ukrainian universities in the European University Alliance.

Ilashchuk expressed gratitude for the fact that the Ukrainian children who were granted asylum in Bulgaria after the outbreak of the war were enrolled in Bulgarian schools. "Many of them managed to successfully adapt and feel safe and socially integrated," she said. Ambassador Ilashchuk also thanked for the assistance in organizing online tests for students from Ukraine and for the overall support from Bulgaria.
