Vice President Iliana Iotova met with representatives of the Bulgarian community in Bratislava, the President's Press Secretariat reported Friday. The meeting took place at the Hristo Botev Bulgarian Secondary School, which marks its 75th anniversary.

Nearly 100 children study there; after 12th grade they acquire both a Bulgarian and a Slovak degree. Many children not of Bulgarian origin study there as well, because the school is among the most prestigious in Bratislava.

Iotova thanked Slovakia for the help in the Bulgarian school's development. “Unfortunately, that is not the case in all countries. We have very serious problems with various wishes for assimilation policies, for the creation of certain obstacles to people of Bulgarian descent, to the study of the Bulgarian language, history, and literature. But with the joint efforts of many institutions in Bulgaria, we are managing, at least at this stage,” the Vice President said.

In her words, the Bulgarian school is famous as one of the best not only in Bratislava but also in Slovakia. There are not many schools like it around the globe that are Bulgarian and have a kindergarten plus classes from first to twelfth grade, Iotova added.

The talks focused on the preservation and increase of lectureships in Bulgarian language and culture abroad. Discussed were options for joints projects with Bulgaria in the field of education and culture.

Some 4,000 Bulgarians live in Slovakia; they have higher education and are respected in Slovakian society, the press release reads.
