Poynter Institute's media literacy project Be MediaWise was presented here on Monday. The joint project developed by Poynter Institute's MediaWise, the American University in Bulgaria, Teach For Bulgaria Foundation, Mediapool.bg and the European Roma Rights Centre aims to reach Bulgarians of all ages.

The project was presented by Vanya Tsvetkova, who develops curricula to teach fact-checking and media literacy at MediaWise, Poynter Institute. Tsvetkova pointed out that media literacy requires a collective effort to be effective.

US Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Elizabeth M. Allen said that media literacy is important in a broader context, as the public is the party, which creates sustainability. She added that programmes such as this one help to improve media literacy and added that they need support from governments and NGOs alike.

Director of the MediaWise project, Alex Mahadevan, said that Poynter Institute was founded some 50 years ago to help journalists and journalism. Mahadevan was confident that the project will improve media literacy, which could benefit any online user. He added that Poynter and numerous other organizations devoted to tackling misinformation see the culmination of their work in Bulgaria.

Minister of Culture Krastyu Krastev, who also attended the event, pointed out that media literacy is more important than ever in the modern world.
