The main challenge facing the world remains the risk of global military conflict and the undermining of economic and social systems worldwide by the war in Ukraine, President Rumen Radev said here on Monday at a briefing for Bulgarian media at the UN headquarters.

Radev will participate in the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, a high-level political forum under the auspices of the UN General Assembly.

"These ambitious goals were set back in 2015 and today's meeting marks the halfway point for their achievement," the President said, quoting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as saying that only 15%of these goals are yet to be met.

"A huge part of them are stagnant, while others have a significant regression," Radev said, adding that the reasons for this include COVID-19, the energy crisis, military conflicts, and climate change. All this has a negative impact on our common development, on poverty, education, health care, the Bulgarian head of State said.
