The young star of Bulgarian chess, Nurgyul Salimova, said that her next goal is to become a Grandmaster and her dream remains becoming a world champion among women.

At the BTA National Press Club, Salimova, 20, gave her first press conference after finishing second at the FIDE Women’s World Cup in Baku on August 21. On her way to the finals, she eliminated six chess players, including multiple fast and rapid chess world champion Anna Muzychuk from Ukraine, In the final she was defeated after a tie break match by Russian Aleksandra Goryachkina.

"My biggest goal and dream is to become a women’s world champion. This is in the long run. For now, I just want to play better and grow as a person and chess player. The mindset and conduct are very important. I would like very much to meet the third norm for Grandmaster. In Baku I met the second.  The first norm I met a year ago. I would say that in the short run my dream is to become a Grandmaster among men. Of course, I want to reach an Elo rating of 2500 which is also very important,” said Salimova, which now holds the titles of International Master and Woman Grandmaster (getting this title is far easier than the actual Grandmaster title, as a player just needs to cross the 2300 rating).

The young chess player admitted that she had been under a lot of stress in the past month, because of the long and difficult tournament, but is very happy with her performance and the final in Baku.

"The past weeks and months were very stressful for me. I defeated six chess players and in the final I could not overcome Grandmaster Goryachkina. I didn’t win the Cup but I played fittingly for the final. I am very proud with what I have accomplished. I felt the support of many Bulgarians and of people from all over the world. I am thankful because I received a lot of positive energy and saw that my work is recognized, and that people love me.” said Salimova.
