Bulgarian firefighters will provide assistance to their Greek counterparts in tackling the large forest fires, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry said Wednesday. The module is scheduled to depart to Greece Wednesday afternoon from the region of Kardzhali (Southeast Bulgaria) through the Makaza border crossing. The module includes five fire engines, two vans, an operational vehicle and 36 firefighters from Kyustendil, Blagoevgrad, Gabrovo, Shumen and Sofia.

The head of the team is the director of the Blagoevgrad fire brigade, Commissioner Valentin Hristov Vassilev.

The Bulgarian firefighters are expected to assist the Greek ground firefighting teams in the Alexandroupolis area.

The forest fires raging in Greece have scorched more than 400,000 acres in the country between Saturday and Monday, a preliminary analysis shows.

The devastating fire near the Greek city of Alexandroupolis has killed 27 people, Sky television reported.
