Survey: Increasing Number of Roma Children
Attend School over
Past Ten Years

Sofia, January 5 (BTA) - Over the past ten years, Bulgaria has registered a considerable increase in the number of children of Roma origin who attend school. Almost twice as many Roma youths finish high school, while the number of university graduates has increased sixfold. This transpired from a nationwide survey commissioned by the Trust for Social Achievement, the foundation said on Tuesday.

The survey focused on the education and job opportunities of the Roma community in Bulgaria over the past ten years. The results show that the share of university graduates is twice higher among Roma youths who have attended kindergarten.

According to the Trust, the last regional in-depth analysis of education in the Roma community was a joint project of the UN Development Programme, the World Bank and the European Commission, conducted in 2011, and there has been no national data about any subsequent developments.

The Trust is organizing an online conference on January 12 to present the results from its study. It will be attended by NGO representatives, Trust for Social Achievement CEO Sarah Perrine, America for Bulgaria Foundation Executive Director Desislava Taliokova, teacher union leader Yanka Takeva, and competent ministers.
