January 15 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said the clean-up of the River Iskur was to start immediately on financing approved at an extraordinary cabinet meeting on Friday afternoon, the government information service said. Heavy rains in the last few days swelled the river which deposited tonnes of trash at the dam of the Svoge hydroelectric power plant.

Sofia Region's Governor Ilian Todorov (left pictured) said the debris covered between one and 1.2 hectares.

The cabinet made available 220,000 leva for the clearing of the river bed. Borissov said: "The mayor and the regional governor must find a way to start the clean-up posthaste, even tomorrow if possible. We do care about the environment." RI/DD
