site.btaInternational Heroin Trafficking Ring Busted in Bulgaria

Sofia, February 2 (BTA) - An international ring trafficking
heroin into the US has been dismantled in Bulgaria, Lyubomir
Yanev, head of the General Directorate for Combating Organized
Crime, told a news briefing here on Tuesday. The operation was
carried out at the request of the US authorities and involved
officials of the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

Valentina Madzharova, acting chief of the Specialized
Prosecution Office, said that six people have been detained, of
whom three Bulgarians. They were all high-ranking members of the
 group which was masterminded by a Serbian national. Authorities
 intercepted around 20 kg of heroin worth 260,000 euro. The
heroin was imported from Turkey and stored in Sofia en route to
Western Europe.

Yanev specified that the seized heroin was part of a larger
