February 5 (BTA) - Bulgarian climber Atanas Skatov fell to his death during a attempt at a winter ascent of K2 in Pakistan. The news came from Alpine Adventure Guides which provided services for Skatov's expedition and was later confirmed by the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry.

Alpine Adventure Guides first tweeted that Skatov fell and vanished during a night attempt to scale K2 in extreme weather. A rescue mission of sherpa immediately went to look for him and two helicopters of the Pakistani army later joined the search.

The fall was apparently caused by a torn rope as Skatov was coming back from Camp3 to Base Camp.

Known as "the vegan climber", Skatov had scaled 10 8,000-m mountains and K2 was going to be his 11th.

Offering condolences to his family, the Foreign Ministry express their "admiration for the strength of his spirit and his unrelenting will to reach the summit". RI/DT/LN/
