February 9 (BTA) - Health Minister Kostadin Angelov said here on Tuesday that 237 emergency medical aid facilities in this country will be refurbished and modernized in a EU-funded project. In Byala Angelov attended the ground-breaking ceremony of the start of construction works on a new building of the local emergency medical aid centre to replace the old one, which is 130 years old.

Angelov said that the 27 emergency centres nationwide are included in the project, along with their 170 branches, six municipal teams, and the 34 emergency rooms in the state-run medical establishments. Also, 400 ambulances will be purchased, 280 of which have already been delivered.

The project is worth nearly 164 million leva.

The Health Minister said that active discussion is underway on a project whereby Bulgaria is divided in no less than ten regions, each of which is to have one big state-of-the-art hospital. The State is to focus its efforts in these ten identical hospitals so that they are well equipped and staffed.

Angelov said that the next step is ensuring enough medical staff for Bulgaria's healthcare, which he said is a problem but that a solution would be found. RI/ZH
