Exhibition to Highlight Japanese Applied Arts

Sofia, October 7 (BTA) - An exhibition entitled "Japan:
Tradition Rediscovered" will open at Sofia's National Ethnology
Museum on October 9 at 6 p.m., the organizers said. The show is
part of the 25th installment of the Days of Japanese Culture in
Bulgaria and will be on until October 26.

The event will be the first of its kind in Bulgaria. It will
highlight two of the most popular and best loved applied arts in
Japan: the paper-cutting art of kiri-e and the art of making
decorative thread balls known as temari. The unusual thing is
that the two artists to be presented in the exhibition are
Bulgarian women who, guided by their sincere interest in
Japanese culture and aesthetics, have made remarkable
achievements in their respective fields which have been
recognized and certified by Japanese experts.

Demonstrations and workshops are planned during the exhibition
on October 11, 12, 18 and 19.

The event has been organized by the Japanese Embassy in Sofia,
the Kiri-e Bulgaria Association and the Kizuna Japanese Club in
Varna in association with Bulgaria's Institute of Ethnology and
Folklore Studies.
