A monument to Pope John Paul II (pontiff from 1978 to 2005) was
unveiled in Belene, on the Bulgarian bank of the Danube River,
by President Rosen Plevneliev. The President said that the event
comes on the day of remembrance for the victims of the
Communist regime in Bulgaria. He underscored the extraordinary
role of Pope John Paul II in the fight against totalitarianism.
The monument was blessed by the Apostolic Nuncio to Bulgaria.
The ceremony in Belene was attended by senior Catholic
officials. Plevneliev also laid flowers at the monument to
Blessed Eugene Bossilkov, Bishop and Martyr, and at the memorial
for the former forced labour camp on Persin Island. He saw an
exhibition entitled "Bulgaria 1949-1989. The Forbidden Truth"
