Prison Guards Stage Protest Again
Demanding Higher Wages,
Better Working Conditions

Sofia, December 29 (BTA) - Prison guards from a few
penitentiaries across the country protested again on Monday to
demand higher wages and better working conditions.

Around 50 guards from the Lovech (Central Bulgaria) prison came
out to protest silently. Their main demands are to have their
wages equalized with those of the Interior Ministry's servants
and compliance with the new Interior Ministry Act. The
protesters also demand compensation for night shifts, time lag
and work on holidays.

The head of the prison guards' trade union, Atanas Trifonov,
said that no talks were held following the latest protest, which
is why prison guards will stage a national protest in Sofia on
January 10. According to Trifonov, the Justice Ministry has
demanded a budget increase, but it was reduced by the Finance
Ministry.

Prison guards from Pazardjik and Bobov Dol penitentiaries also
protested.
