Alpha Research Agency Finds Continuing Upward Trend in PM Rating, Limited Support for Key State Institutions

Sofia, April 20 (BTA) - There is a continuing trend of rising
personal rating of PM Boyko Borissov (33.4 per cent) and a
limited support for basic state institutions, a regular survey
of the Alpha Research polling agency showed. The survey was
conducted between April 7 and 17 among a representative
selection of 1,020 adults.

The PM's rating has risen slightly but consistently after his
second return to power. The ranking of the most successful
ministers is led by Regional Development Minister Liliana
Pavlova (26.3 per cent), followed by Health Minister Peter
Moskov (24.3 per cent). They are closely followed by Deputy
Prime Minister for European Funds and Economic Policies Tomislav
Donchev, who has lost some of his support, and Social Minister
Ilaylo Kalfin, whose rating has risen to 19.7 per cent.

The new Interior Minister, Roumyana Buchvarova, has also seen a
rise in her personal index, while the Finance Minister Vladislav
Goranov has registered a considerable decline, together with
Economy Minister Bozhidar Loukarski and Education Minister Todor
Tanev, who received the least public support.

According to the respondents, the most successful government
policies are infrastructure (38 per cent), culture (29 per
cent), foreign affairs (25 per cent), while the failures include
income policy (9 per cent), followed by the economic, social
and education policy (17 per cent each).

The survey revealed limited public support for the activity of
basic state institutions. Confidence in the President (25.6 per
cent), the government (22.7 per cent), Parliament (10.6 per
cent) and the Prosecutor General (11 per cent) remains the same
or drops by 1 to 2 per cent since January 2015.

The case of Corporate Commercial Bank (Corpbank)  continues to
concern the public and to accumulate distrust of the political
class which is suspected of trying to benefit from the assets of
the bank together with the newly emerged buyer. Eighty-three
per cent of Bulgarians think the state should not allow the
transaction with the buyer company from Luxembourg.

The survey also established a decline of confidence in
politicians mostly from the left spectrum - former president
Georgi Purvanov (from 23 to 20 per cent) and Bulgarian Socialist
Party current leader Mihail Mikov (from 14 to 13 per cent). In
the case of the nationalist formations, the most significant
rise was registered for Valeri Simeonov (from 11 to 15 per cent)
and Krassimir Karakachanov (from 13 to 16 per cent), less in
the case of Volen Sideorv (from 8 to 9.4 per cent). The
Reformist Bloc leaders have retained their positions - Radan
Kunev and Meglena Kuneva (at 14 per cent each) and Bozhidar
Loukarski at 9 per cent.

Support for Borissov's leadership in the incumbent coalition and
the lack of an alternative continue to condition a considerable
electoral advantage of GERB before the other political forces.
If elections were held next Sunday, 22.4 per cent would have
supported GERB (down by 0.8 per cent), 10.2 per cent would have
supported BSP (down by 1.2 per cent), 7 per cent would have
supported the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, 5.8 per cent -
the Reformist Bloc (down by 0.7 per cent), 5.7 per cent - the
Patriotic Front (up 0.6 per cent) and 3.1 per cent would have
voted for Ataka (up 0.5 per cent) with 2.2. per cent voting for
ABV.

With 1 per cent support the party of former journalist Nikolai
Barekov is practically disappearing, the agency said.

The conclusion from the survey is that there is consolidated
support only in the centre and to the right. The rest of the
political spectrum is extremely fragmented. This does not allow
mobilization of public energy, in spite of the high levels of
dissatisfaction from the work of state institutions and the
economic condition in the country.
