BGN 560 Mln to
Be Extended to Municipalities for
Waste Management in New Programming Period

Veliko Turnovo, April 24 (BTA) - The Bulgarian municipalities
will receive 560 million leva to implement waste management
policies in the new programming period (2014-2020), Environment
and Water Minister Ivelina Vassileva told journalists on Friday.
She took part in a working meeting of municipality mayors on
issues of the environmental legislation.

The new operational programme does not envisage recultivating of
old landfills. Its purpose is to upgrade the established
systems and introduce European and world practices. The efforts
will be oriented towards prevention of waste generation, their
preliminary separation and composting, she explained.

Funds for recultivating of landfills will be allocated under the
national budget. Vassileva recalled that 90 million leva were
spent for this purpose during the previous programming period
and they were used for the recultivating of 40 old landfills.
Within the previous programming period, the municipalities
received 750 million leva for the building of waste management
systems, the Minister also said.

Vassileva inspected the construction of a solid household waste
depot in the Sheremtya Village, Veliko Turnovo Region, which is
of the worth of 30 million leva and is financed under OP
Regional Development. Five local landfills that do not meet the
requirements of EU legislation will be closed after the opening
of the new facility.

Another 12 regional waste management facilities are expected to
be built across the country. /LI/TK/
