CITUB Wants New Income Policy Because of Low Economic Growth

Gabrovo, Central Bulgaria, April 27 (BTA) - Economic growth in
the country  continues to be stagnated, although the Ministry of
Finance forecasts are quite more optimistic and deflation has
become a fixture in economy, Confederation of Independent Trade
Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) Vice President Plamen Nankov told
journalists Monday. The trade union continues to claim that a
new income policy in Bulgaria is required. The main motors of
economic growth should be consumption and investment activity,
he added.

According to Nankov, CITUB continues to follow the development
in the country, and regardless of whether there are positive
things, the trade union itself is not optimistic. Since Bulgaria
still ranks last in the EU in terms of income, the most recent
congress of the trade union decided that incomes should top the
most important priorities.

CITUB appeals to the government and employers to urgently draft
a package of measures to raise incomes and cannot accept the
statements that salaries in Bulgaria are low because labour
productivity in the economy is low. In illustration, Nankov said
a Bulgarian worker produces nearly 49 per cent of what a German
worker does but receives 25 per cent of his/her payment.

CITUB demanded 400 leva minimum salary even this year (compared
to the current 360 leva) and resumption of the practice to
negotiate the level of salaries every year.

Gabrovo hosted a discussion on payment and European standards
organized by the local CITUB chapter on the occasion of the
trade unionÒs 25th anniversary.
