International Arts and Crafts Festival in Oreshak
Attracts Artists from 14 Countries,
Thousands of Visitors

Village of Oreshak, Northern Bulgaria, April 30 (BTA) - An
international arts and crafts festival held within a national
folk arts and crafts exhibition on May 1 to 3 in this village
will present works by 14 countries and welcome thousands of
visitors. This is the first time when the traditional folk arts
and crafts exhibition turns into a festival, Troyan Mayor Donka
Mihailova told BTA.

The ambassadors of Indonesia, Morocco, China, Portugal and
Palestine are expected to present personally the arts and crafts
collections of their countries. The diversity of the world
cultural heritage features works of artists from Bulgaria,
Germany, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Sudan, Serbia, Turkey and
Japan.

Visitors to the event and to the Troyan Municipality will be
able to recognize not only the traditions and lifestyle of the
past but also the values and the peculiar features of the
contemporary way of life of different nations. The programme of
the event includes singing, dancing, food-making, crafts, fine
arts and applied arts of the participating countries.

Craft workshops in the exhibition park will show old Troyan
crafts. The visitors will be able to not only see artisans
working and buy articles from them but also try their hand at
craft-making.

The first national folk arts and crafts exhibition in Oreshak
was held 30 years ago. After a break two years ago, the
international participation in the event has been restored and
the event's 2015 edition is the first time it is held as a
festival.

More and more young and enterprising people have been coming to
do business, mostly hotel and restaurant management and tourism,
in this small Troyan village, whose population numbers 2,300.
There are also business people who preserve and enrich the old
crafts. Local people say that tourism in Oreshak has been
booming in the past few years, and attracts people from other
regions who find jobs in the village.

The area boasts picturesque trails. Foreign and Bulgarian
tourists come on hiking holidays and tour the numerous sights:
the Natural History Museum in the village of Cherni Osum, the
Troyan Monastery, the arts and crafts exhibition, galleries, and
many other.

The poor infrastructure and the fact that the Troyan-Kurnare
pass is not open year-round are listed as the main problems of
Oreshak.

Oreshak Mayor Hristo Terziev says that the local people start to
change, to perceive themselves as true Europeans. The houses
looks better, with newly-painted exteriors and flower gardens,
while the industry and hospitality of the local people makes the
village a unique spot. "The merit for this goes to everyone
here and it is no surprise that Oreshak is one of the ten most
visited villages in Bulgaria," Terziev said. VI /ZH/
