Bulgarian Parliament Head, Mexican Senator Discuss Promotion of Bilateral Relations, Student Exchanges
.
Sofia, June 1 (BTA) - Bulgarian National Assembly Chair Tsetska
Tsacheva and Mexican Senate External Relations Committee Chair
Gabriela Cuevas Barron conferred here on Monday. They discussed
the promotion of bilateral relations and the deepening of
contacts between the two parliaments, the Parliamentary Press
Centre reported.

Cuevas, who is paying a two-day visit to Bulgaria, also held
talks with National Assembly Foreign Policy Committee Deputy
Chair Dzhema Grozdanova and with Deputy Foreign Minister
Valentin Poryazov.

Tsacheva pointed out that Bulgaria attaches importance to the
advancement of bilateral relations with Mexico, adding that the
Senator visit will contribute to the deepening of parliamentary
contacts.

"I am pleased that we are now deepening bilateral ties precisely
through parliamentary contacts," Cuevas said for her part,
quoted in the press release. In her words, Mexico must maintain
far closer relations with the countries of Central and Southern
Europe, and it has areas of shared interest with Bulgaria.

The guest emphasized that the Committee she chairs proposes the
opening of a Mexican embassy in Bulgaria.

Tsacheva sees an opportunity for close cooperation in all areas
through bilateral contacts and through the European Union. She
also expressed the hope that Mexico will back Irina Bokova's bid
for UN Secretary-General.

"We Bulgarians regard Mexico as a country of ages-long history,
with a contribution to world civilization," the National
Assembly Chair said, adding that politicians must provide
opportunities for scientific, economic and trade exchanges
between the two countries. Some production lines in Bulgaria
would be of interest to Mexican business, she noted.

Cuevas sees student exchanges as particularly useful for
increasing the closeness between Bulgaria and Mexico. "A mutual
interest in this area exists, but it must be translated into
reality," she said, quoted in the press release.

Migration problems, which are similar for both countries, were
also on the agenda.
