President Plevneliev Talks with PACE Rapporteur for Post-monitoring Dialogue with Bulgaria Matusic

Sofia, June 3 (BTA) - Bulgaria has active and strong positions
on the European agenda's matters and is part of the solution to
the problems in Europe, President Rosen Plevneliev said
Wednesday. He held talks with Frano Matusic, rapporteur for
post-monitoring dialogue with Bulgaria of the Parliamentary
Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Plevneliev's press
secretariat reported.

Matusic is in Sofia June 2-5 for high-level meetings with
members of the government, opposition and judiciary.

At the meeting with Plevneliev, the PACE rapporteur commented
that the conduct of a referendum on citizens' electoral rights
will contribute to a better quality of Bulgarian democracy. The
head of State acquainted his guest with part of his reasons to
initiate a national referendum on election rules to be held
concurrently with the local elections this autumn. The reasoning
is about to be submitted in Parliament.

Plevneliev and Matusic exchanged opinions on key reforms on
Bulgaria's agenda this year. Particular focus was put on the
judicial reform and the constitutional changes related to it.

The PACE rapporteur assured Plevneliev that the Council of
Europe will continue to support Bulgaria in each effort to
improve the quality of democracy, which is of key importance for
the whole region. The head of State and Matusic agreed that
problems should be indicated openly and honestly so that they
can be solved.
