Irina Bokova Stands Every Chance of Becoming UN Secretary-General, Deputy Parliament Speaker Says

Sofia, July 27 (BTA) - Deputy National Assembly Chairman Krassimir Karakachanov met with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova in Sofia Monday as part of Bokova's series of talks with Bulgarian politicians focusing on the country's cooperation with the UN education and culture agency.

Karakachanov said that Bokova would make an excellent candidate for UN Secretary-General that should be supported by Bulgaria. "I believe that as a candidate she will represent Bulgaria in a worthy way, because she has proven that she possesses the necessary qualities and diplomatic experience," he said.

"Bulgaria will hardly get another opportunity in the next 100 years to nominate a figure who stands every chance of becoming UN Secretary-General," Karakachanov said. Besides, it would be great to have a woman at the helm of the world body, he added.

Bokova said that UNESCO's 70th anniversary this year provides an occasion to review Bulgaria's role in protecting tangible and intangible heritage and national identity.
