Brucellosis Outbreak Detected in Southwestern Bulgaria

Kyustendil, Southwestern Bulgaria, July 29 (BTA) - A brucellosis outbreak was registered in the town of Rila, Kyustendil Region, the local office of the Food Safety Agency (FSA) reported on Wednesday. One man was diagnosed with this highly contagious disease and 15 goats in three farms tested positive.

In humans, brucellosis can be caused by ingestion of unpasteurized milk or undercooked meat from infected animals. Symptoms include profuse sweating and joint and muscle pain. They can be treated with antibiotics. Infected animals are culled.

The Regional Epizootics Commission in Kyustendil will hold an extraordinary meeting later on Wednesday in connection with the outbreak, FSA-Kyustendil said. The meeting will consider more measures besides the initial steps already taken to curb the spread of the disease.
