Charges Pressed for Rape, Murder of British Woman

Sofia, August 4 (BTA) - A resident of the southern town of Yambol has been charged with the murder of a British woman in July, the prosecution office said Tuesday. Ivan Nikolov was accused of raping Jannet Bennet on July 30-31 in the village of Malomir, Yambol District, and killing her in a particularly brutal manner in an attempt to cover up the rape.

The accused is a repeat offender and has a total of 10 sentences for the period from 2002 to 2012, for offences ranging from theft to drunken driving and driving without a licence. In December 2012 he served out his last sentence.

Bennet's body was discovered on July 31 with marks of a violent death.

The woman was in her 60s and had been living in the village with her husband for a couple of months.

The village of Malomir has the biggest community of Britons in Yambol Region, 300 people.
