EU-Funded Programme to Finance Construction of Municipal Compost Plants

Sofia, August 4 (BTA) - Municipalities which do not yet have a composting plant for green and food waste will have an opportunity to apply for funding to build one from the EU-supported Operational Programme Environment 2014-2020. The same programme will also finance the construction of access infrastructure, Environment Minister Ivelina Vassileva told the press here Tuesday.

Bulgaria has made a commitment to reduce biodegradable waste by 35 per cent by 2020.

Funding will be available for composting plants with capacity from 2,000 to 20,000 t. The smallest ones (2,000 to 4,000 t) will get up to 3.4 million leva; those from 4,000 to 6,000 t 3.9 million leva; 6,000 to 10,000 t 5.4 million leva and the largest, from 10,000 to 20,000 t up to 7.4 million leva.

The amount of the grant will depend on the area that the plant will service and on the complexity of the project. The project will need the endorsement of the municipal council.
