Bulgarian, Spanish Prime Ministers Meet in Madrid

Madrid, October 21 (BTA) - Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov met with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in Madrid Wednesday in the sidelines of a congress of the European People's Party (EPP), Borissov's GERB party said. The two discussed the migratory pressure on the southern EU border and ways to solve the crisis.

Borissov assured Rajoy that Bulgaria is protecting its part of the external EU border according to the highest Schengen standards, and the Bulgarian government is coping with the situation. The Spanish government leader said Europe needs a common, strong solution to the migration problem.

Borissov updated his counterpart on the political situation in Bulgaria and the Balkans and on the country's planned participation in a meeting called by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels on Sunday.

He also spoke about the campaign for the upcoming local elections in Bulgaria. Rajoy wished GERB a clear victory in the elections. Borissov expressed his conviction that Spain's People's Party will win the elections at the end of the year.

Earlier in the day, Borissov had a working meeting with EPP Secretary General Antonio Lopez-Isturiz. In addition to matters to be discussed at the EPP congress, the two also considered the migratory pressure in the Balkans over the last few months and the migration challenges facing Europe.
