Vice President Popova Participates in 2nd Forum of Bulgarian Schools in Western Hemisphere
Chicago, April 23 (BTA) - Vice President Margarita Popova is a special guest at the 2nd Forum of Bulgarian Schools in the Western Hemisphere, organized by the Association of Bulgarian Schools abroad, the head of State's press secretariat said Saturday.
Participating in the event are university lecturers and over 100 representatives of Bulgarian schools in eleven States of America, Canada, UK, France, Austria and Cyprus.
At the John Atanasoff school in Chicago, Popova took part in a discussion on the national priorities and the policy for preserving and popularising the Bulgarian language and traditions abroad, as well as the contemporary alternatives in the education in Bulgarian language in a multi-cultural environment.
Popova talked with Meredith Clason, Associate Director of the Center for East European and Russian/Eurasian Studies at the University of Chicago, about the long-lasting and fruitful cooperation between the Center and the Bulgarian Academy of Science and the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia.
Popova visited the library of the University of Chicago, where she laid a wreath of flowers at the monument to Bulgarian writer Aleko Konstantinov.
Within her visit to the US, Popova also met with Tim Neese, Mayor of Elkhart, a city fraternized with Bulgaria's Kurdjali Municipality, and addressed the participants in the 6th Verea Folklore Festival in Chicago, an event gathering Bulgarian folklore groups and performers from the US and Canada in the name of preserving Bulgarian traditions and culture.
