Baby Pelican Born on Persin Island

Sofia, June 6 (BTA) - A Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) was hatched on the Persin (Belene) Island, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) said.

This is a big environmental event because Dalmatian pelican is an endangered species worldwide and the Persin colony is relatively new. Before its establishment, the only colony of Dalmatian pelicans in Bulgaria was located in the Sreburna Lake.

The species is highly vulnerable to diseases, extreme weather conditions and other threats, environmentalists say. About a dozen other couples are hatching in the colony.

Several couples of great white pelicans have also been spotted on the island. According to the Red Book, this species is considered extinct in Bulgaria.
