Three-Quarters of Bulgarians Oppose Ratification of
Istanbul Convention against Domestic
Violence, Violence against Women


Sofia, February 23 (BTA) - About three-quarters of Bulgarians people oppose the ratification of the Istanbul Convention against domestic violence and violence against women, according to a poll by the Sova Harris Agency. The poll was taken by phone among 828 adult Bulgarians between February 8 and 10, Sova Harris owner Vassil Tonchev said in a news conference here Friday.

He said that probably over 99 per cent of respondents have not read the document and inform themselves about it from the news media.

The poll also found that 22 per cent of respondents have witnessed domestic violence. 61 per cent of the victims of domestic violence have tried to resolve the problem themselves, 24 per cent did nothing about it and some 22 per cent discussed the matter with other family members.

Only 12 per cent reported the incident to the police and a negligible number took the case to the court.

According to the poll, 94 per cent of adult Bulgarians believe that violence against women is inadmissible and 95 per cent say the same for violence against children.

For 73.5 per cent of respondents, Bulgaria should not recognize "third" or "other" gender. 70 per cent are also opposed to recognizing gay marriage.

Only 11 per cent of people believe that the ratification of the Istanbul Convention will help deal with violence against women and children.

Thirty per cent of respondents believe that the ratification of the convention will bring about the recognition of "third gender", legalization of gay marriage and raising of children in same-sex couples. VI/LN/
