Exhibition Marking 75th Anniversary of Rescue
of Bulgarian Jews Opens
at Archives Agency

Sofia, March 14 (BTA) - A documentary exhibition entitled "1943: Persecution and Defence. The Fate of the Bulgarian Jews" is opening at the Archives State Agency on March 15.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews, the Agency has organized the first exposition telling the stories of the Bulgarians honoured as Righteous Among the Nations by Israel's Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center.

There are twenty of them, the most popular figures being Dimiter Peshev, Patriarch Kiril and Exarch Stefan of Sofia.

The exposition highlights the stories of ordinary people, little known in Bulgaria, who saved Jews and won recognition from Yad Vashem.

The exhibition also features the first manifestations of hatred and anti-Semitism predating the adoption of the Protection of the Nation Act. Bulgaria's anti-Jewish legislation effective between 1941 and 1944 is presented chronologically.

Those attending the opening will hear a presentation on a valuable donation, the archives of one of the rescued Thessaloniki Jews, Rafael Kamhi, an activist of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization. VI/DD
