Only 14% of Companies Are Ready to
Comply with New Personal
Data Rules

Sofia, March 14 (BTA) - A survey by the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has found that only 14 per cent of its members are ready to comply with the new rules for personal data protection. The survey was taken on-line between February 14 and 27 among businesses, sectoral organizations and regional chambers of commerce ahead of the May 25 entry into force of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.

The survey also sought to raise awareness of the new requirements.

Noncompliance with the regulation carries a hefty fine.

The survey found that half of the respondents are only partly familiar with the new rules, 10 per cent are perfectly familiar with them and 16 per cent had not heard about them before and are not aware of their responsibilities.

Some 71 per cent of the respondents expect to have serious problems with bringing their personal data processing systems in compliance with the new regulation. 59 per cent doubt that they will be able to meet the deadlines set in the regulation.

The survey was taken in all economic sectors. 40 per cent of the respondents were micro-businesses (up to 9 employees), 30 per cent were small companies (10-49 employees), 23 were medium-sized companies (50-249 employees) and 7 per cent were large companies (over 250 employees). LY/LN/
