Sofia, March 17 (BTA) - Just 3 per cent of the milk products checked in 2017 were substandard, said the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA). On its suggestion for two years now, a commission of representatives of the Agency, the Association of Milk Processors, the National Association of Milk Processors and the Commission for Consumer Protection have made surprise checks by taking samples of cheese, yogurt, milk and other products from shops to see if they contain non-milk fat.

The organizations take turns every week to name the shops from which each member of the commission takes samples from two milk products for testing.

Last year 169 samples were tested, including 98 samples of white brined cheese, 46 of kashkaval yellow cheese, 17 of butter and eight of yogurt.

Three white cheese samples and two kashkaval cheese samples were found to contain non-milk fat (2.96 per cent of all samples). Those products were recalled and labelled as imitation products containing milk. The producers, who are not named by the BFSA, were issued statements of violations.

Checks are continuing this year. Milk products are also tested for fat and water content.
