Sofia, March 20 (BTA) - The European Economic and Social Committee and the Bulgarian National Association Active Consumers marked European Consumer Day 2018 here on Tuesday by a conference entitled "The digital economy: what deal for consumers?"

Addressing the event, Bulgarian Economy Minister Emil Karanikolov said that the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union will make efforts for building the digital single market by achieving maximum progress on the European Commission's proposal for a Directive on certain aspects concerning contracts for the supply of digital content and the proposals for a Directive on certain aspects concerning contracts for the online and other distance sales of goods.

"The two legislative proposals seek to eliminate contract law-related barriers to cross-border online trade and to establish uniform, clear and harmonized rules for the supply of digital content and online sales of goods on the European market," the Minister said. "Their adoption will help increase trust in the digital economy within the EU, will facilitate economic growth and the better functioning of the internal market," he emphasized.

Karanikolov noted that the Bulgarian Presidency has achieved good progress in the negotiations with the European Parliament on the adoption of the proposal for a Digital Content Directive and expressed the hope that the negotiating process on this matter will be successfully finalized.

The Economy Minister confirmed that the Bulgarian Presidency will assign priority to work on a New Deal for Consumers legislative package so as to achieve a stable and up-to-date legal framework intended to improve the application of law in consumer protection, including consumer digital rights.
