Sofia, May 1 (BTA) - The lowest temperatures in May will be between 5 C and 10 C and the highest between 29 C and 34 C, said the National Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The average monthly temperature is expected around and above normal, which is 16019 C in most of the country, 15-16 C on the coast and high-altitude valleys, 2-5 C in the mountains and 12-14 C in the lower mountains.

The monthly precipitation will be around and above normal in the West and below normal in the East. The normal amount of rain for May is 50-70 l/sq m, 30-50 l/sq m on the coast and in the valley of the Strouma River, and 70-140 l/sq m in the highlands.

May 1-10 will be sunny with clouds in the afternoon in the West and only occasional thundery showers. The prevailing highs will be 25-30 C May 4-10 will be unsettled with overcast skies and frequent brief showers with thunder and wind. Hails are not unlikely.

May 10-20 will have no stable weather with longer sunny hours and rare showers, mostly in the mountains. Temperatures going slightly up. Getting unsettled again around May 15 and May 20 with thundery showers and hail storms.

May 20-30 will get hotter but still unsettled with more sun in the morning and frequent showers and thundery storms in the afternoon and evening, especially in Central and Western Bulgaria (around May 21, 24-26).

May is the last spring month, when the sun shines more and temperatures increase significantly. At the end of the month the sea temperature reaches 17-18 C. About the same time ocean air masses start penetrating from the northwest bringing a significant increase of showers accompanied by thunder storms and hail. Once every ten years May has unusual cold spells with snow at altitudes of 500 m and over and spring frost in high-altitude valleys. LN/
