Bulgaria in
GRECO's
Annual Report

Strasbourg/Sofia, May 3 (BTA) - Bulgaria is among the country for which the Council of Europe's Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) has the most recommendations in its annual report. The report warns that new legislative initiatives in certain European countries in 2017 reversed reforms previously undertaken to strengthen the prevention of corruption or started reforms that may result in breaches of the Council of Europe's anti-corruption standards.

It says that although there was overall progress in introducing new measures to fight corruption in respect of MPs, judges and prosecutors, their practical implementation remained slower than desirable.

In the report, GRECO acknowledges the essential role played by journalists to fight corruption.

The countries which get the most recommendations in the new report are Armenia (24), Slovenia (21), Azerbaijan (21), Bulgaria (19), Estonia (19), Macedonia (19), Belgium (19), Luxembourg (18), Latvia (16), Poland (16) and Slovakia (16).

Bulgaria (along with Slovenia) showed the second best compliance with recommendations in previous reports (12 recommendations fulfilled). The leader is Estonia with 14 recommendations. Next come Azerbaijan (11), Latvia and Finland (8), Armenia, the UK and Poland (7).

Bulgaria is fifth with the share of recommendations which have been complied with (63.2 per cent). Finland is the only country which has fulfilled all recommendations. PK/LN/
